WOMEN IN STEM
This International Women's Day 2023, we are excited to be celebrating some of Australia's most extraordinary Women in STEMM. To showcase their achievements and expertise, to highlight their standing in their fields and the path they are paving for other women and girls in all things Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine.
The 13 women featured in our design are just a small selection of the Australian Women in STEMM. Jess has designed each portrait to replicate the periodic table, symbolising the elements each Dr and Professor bring to their industry.
These amazing women are:
H - DR. HELEN ALMA TURNER NEWTON - Geneticist and Statistician. Leading Authority on sheep genetics and she used quantitative genetics to improve the quality and quanity in sheep's wool. To read more about Helen, click here.
Mw - PROF. MARY-ANNE WILLIAMS - Robotics and Behavourial Designer in Artificial Intelligence. Mary-Anne Williams is a leading expert in AI and Innovation. She is also a World Champion in Social Robotics 201902022. She is also committed to educating, inspiring the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs in the AI and Robotics Space.
Lh - PROF. LIZ HARRY - Microbiologist and Biochemist. Professor Liz Harry pioneered fluorescence microscopy, revealing the makeup of bacterial cells which then changed our thinking on how bacterial cells divide.
Aw - DR. ANIKA MOLESWORTH - Agroecology Scientist and Climate Change Science Communicator. Her research includes finding solutions and improvements to the environmental conditions and livelihoods of subsistence farmers.
Ej - PROF. EMMA JOHNSTON - Marine Biologist. A leading authority in Marine Ecology, Professor Johnston focuses on the impacts of pollution, microplastics and invasive species on marine ecology, most notably in Antarctic and Australian waters. You might also recognise her from the Coast Australia TV Series.
Dh - PROF. DOROTHY HILL - Geologist and Palaeontologist. Professor Hill was also the first female professor at an Australian university and the first female president of the Australian Academy of Science.
M - DR. MARGUERITE EVANS-GALEA. Molecular Biologist and the Co-Founder of Women in STEMM Australia. Her research includes cell and gene therapy and neurodegenerative diseases. She has a champion for gender equality in STEMM.
Tm - PROF. TANYA MONRO - Physicist. Prof Monro is a leading authority in photonics and optical physics. She is also the first woman to hold the position of Chief Defence Scientist Australia.
Mj - ASSOC. PROF. MISTY JENKINS - Immunologist. Assoc. Prof Jenkins is the first Indigenous Australia to attend Oxford and Cambridge Universities as a PhD research fellow. Her research focuses on lymphocytes and cancer treatments, notably brain cancer. She is also an advocate for education opportunities for Indigenous Australians.
